Practical guide

If someone is in danger inside, such as a child, an elderly person or a pet trapped alone, or you smell gas or smoke, call 995 first and do not wait for a locksmith. For an ordinary lock-out, work through the steps below before you touch the door.

Check the simple things first

Try every door and window you can reach safely and legally, and check with family or housemates who might already be home, or a neighbour or relative holding a spare key. If the key turns but the door will not open, the fault may be the latch or lock body rather than a true lock-out, which changes what the technician needs to bring.

If your main door has a digital lock, a flat battery is one of the most common causes of a sudden lock-out in Singapore homes. Many digital locks can be powered temporarily from outside, for example by touching a 9V battery to two contacts on the keypad, or using an emergency mechanical key. The exact method depends on the brand, so check the lock's manual if you have kept it, or its model number on the body of the lock.

What not to do

Do not force the key if it will not turn. Pushing harder is how keys snap off inside a cylinder, which turns a simple lock-out into a longer repair. Do not kick, shoulder or hit the door, since this can damage the door, the frame and the lock together, and HDB and condo doors are not built to absorb that kind of impact without needing real repair afterwards.

It should go without saying, but do not climb along ledges, parapets or through windows at height to get back in. No lock-out is worth that risk, and it is quicker and safer to wait twenty minutes for a technician.

How a proper lock visit works

  • The technician asks you to show that you live at the address, for example an ID card with your address, or a utility bill or tenancy agreement
  • They assess the lock first, and use a non-destructive method where one is possible
  • They tell you clearly whether the lock needs repair or replacement before starting any work
  • You agree the price with them before work begins, not after

Be cautious with anyone who avoids explaining the work, will not give a price up front, or pushes you toward a full lock replacement before they have even looked at the lock. A reputable technician tells you the cheaper option first if it will actually work.

Repair or replace the lock?

A worn latch, a stiff cylinder or a loose handle can often be adjusted or repaired without replacing the whole lock. Replacement makes more sense if the lock is badly worn, physically damaged, or if your keys were lost or stolen, in which case changing the lock is the safer choice regardless of cost.

Signs your lock is about to fail

  • The key feels stiff or gritty turning in the cylinder
  • You need to lift or jiggle the door slightly to get it to lock
  • The latch does not catch cleanly on the first try
  • The handle feels loose or wobbles when you turn it
  • A digital lock keeps showing a low battery warning

Catching any of these early usually means a quick adjustment during a normal visit, rather than an emergency call-out at eleven at night.

FAQ

Quick questions

Can you open a lock without damaging the door?

In many cases, yes. The technician tries a non-destructive method first and tells you clearly if the lock needs to be replaced instead.

Should I replace the lock after a lock-out?

Only if it is worn or damaged, or your keys were lost or stolen. If keys are missing, changing the lock is the safer choice.
