A weak shower turns a quick wash into a frustrating one. The cause can be as simple as a clogged shower head, or something further along the pipes. Start by finding out how widespread the problem is.
Step 1: Narrow it down
| What you notice | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Only the shower is weak | Shower head, hose or mixer problem |
| Only hot water is weak | Water heater or hot-water pipe issue |
| Every tap in the home is weak | Stop valve or supply issue |
| Your neighbours have the same problem | Building supply issue |
Common causes
Clogged shower head
Minerals and grit build up in the small holes over time. This is the most common cause, and the spray often looks uneven.
Twisted or damaged hose
A kinked or worn shower hose restricts flow. Check it along its full length.
Worn mixer or cartridge
If the mixer’s internal parts are worn or blocked, flow drops even when the head is clean.
Partly closed stop valve
After a repair or renovation, a valve may not have been opened fully.
Water heater issues
If only hot water is weak, the heater’s inlet, filter or internal parts may need attention.
What you can safely try
- Clean the shower head. Unscrew it and soak it to dissolve the scale, following the manufacturer’s care guidance for the finish. Then brush the nozzles.
- Check the hose for kinks, bulges or leaks.
- Check the stop valves and make sure they’re fully open.
- Test other taps to see whether the problem is just the shower.
When to call a plumber
- Pressure is still weak after cleaning the shower head
- Only the hot water is affected
- The mixer is stiff, leaking or hard to control
- Several taps in your home are weak but your neighbours are fine
If the whole block is affected, the problem is with the building’s supply. In HDB estates, contact your Town Council.
