A wall-mounted TV saves space and looks clean. But drilling into the wrong wall, or using the wrong anchors, can end with a cracked wall, a hit pipe or a TV on the floor. Here’s what to check first.
1. Know your wall type
Singapore homes usually have two kinds of walls:
- Concrete walls: strong and ideal for heavy TVs, but they need a proper drill and concrete anchors.
- Lightweight or dry walls: common in newer flats and condos. They can hold a TV, but only with the right fixings or extra support.
Not sure which you have? Knock on it. A solid, dull sound usually means concrete. A hollower sound usually means a lightweight wall.
2. Never drill into the household shelter
In HDB flats, the household shelter’s walls, ceiling and floor must not be drilled or hacked. Choose another wall for your TV.
3. Watch out for hidden pipes and wiring
Electrical wires and water pipes often run inside walls, usually straight up or down from switches and power points. Drilling into one is dangerous and expensive. Professionals scan the wall before drilling.
4. Choose the right bracket
| Bracket type | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | Holds the TV flat against the wall | A clean look, seating directly in front |
| Tilting | Angles the screen up or down | Mounting slightly higher, reducing glare |
| Full-motion | Swings and extends from the wall | Open-plan rooms, viewing from different spots |
Check that the bracket matches your TV’s size, weight and mounting-hole pattern (called VESA), listed in your TV’s manual.
5. Get the height right
A common rule is to place the centre of the screen near your eye level when you’re seated. Mounting too high is the most common mistake, and it strains your neck.
6. Plan for cables
Decide where the power point, set-top box and soundbar will go before drilling. Cable trunking painted to match the wall is the simplest way to hide wires without hacking.
Why use a professional?
A proper installation means the right anchors for your wall, a level mount, a safe drilling spot and tidy cables, usually done in about an hour.
